Maitake’s History and Tradition

Maitake (= “dancing mushroom”) earned its name in Japan because collectors were said to dance with joy upon finding it. It was considered so valuable that it was sometimes traded for its weight in silver. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it has long been used to strengthen the immune system, regulate blood sugar and blood pressure, and as a general tonic (Wu et al., 2021).

 

Bioactive Compounds and Mechanisms of Action

Active Compounds

·       Polysaccharides: Multiple sugars, especially beta-glucans, regarded as the main active agents, which modulate immune cells (He et al., 2017; Wu et al., 2021).

·       Triterpenes and phenols: Secondary plant compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties (Szydłowska-Tutaj et al., 2023).

·       Proteins and peptides (short protein fragments): Act as antioxidants and immunomodulators (Dissanayake et al., 2018).

Effects

Proper Dosage

In clinical studies, dosages between 1.5 and 3 g of maitake extract daily have been investigated. Positive effects were observed, for example, in immune modulation and metabolic parameters. Standardized beta-glucan extracts are considered effective in doses ranging from 200 to 1000 mg per day (Wu et al., 2021).

 

Forms of Administration – Traditional and Modern

·       Tea (decoction): Traditionally prepared by simmering pieces or powder of the mushroom.

·       Extracts: Water- or alcohol-based, containing concentrated active compounds.

Maitake and the Limitations of Conventional Medicine

Although numerous studies on maitake (Grifola frondosa) show promising results—ranging from immunomodulatory and antitumor to metabolic effects—conventional medicine remains hesitant. The reason is not a lack of data: preclinical studies and early clinical trials have documented positive effects for years, particularly in oncology and metabolic disorders (Hetland et al., 2020; Roldan-Deamicis et al., 2016).

Instead of seriously considering the growing number of high-quality preclinical findings and the mushroom’s long-standing role in Asian medicine, critics repeatedly cite “insufficient evidence.” As long as large-scale, placebo-controlled studies are lacking, maitake preparations remain absent from official guidelines—despite the fact that scientific literature has long discussed the mushroom as a promising candidate for the prevention and complementary treatment of cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases (Venturella et al., 2021; Bai et al., 2019).
